Please reach out to your orchestra director if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No experience necessary! In fact, very few students have any musical experience when they join orchestra. The class is set up to teach each student how to read music and how to play the instrument!
Orchestra is a class during the school day (that will be part of your schedule) with minimal after school requirements for beginning orchestra students. Your orchestra director will give you the specifics.
The majority of the instruments will need to be acquired by the parent, and most opt for a Rent-to-Own program from a reputable, local music store. This gives plenty of flexibility and options for you and your student. Some of the larger instruments (like bass) are rented from the school. Your orchestra director can provide more specific information.
Instruments are typically on a first-come, first-served basis. As with any team, there has to be balance. Not everyone can be a pitcher, but there is always room on the team for you! Similarly, the orchestra director has to balance out the instrumentation so there is a complete, characteristic, orchestra sound.
Standard instruments offered in beginning orchestra are violin, viola, cello, and bass. Instruments may vary by school. Check out the Instruments of the Orchestra page (found at the top of the website) for demonstrations and descriptions!
